Boré, D.; Barbieri, M.A.; Catasti, V..
This study was carried out within the Project Cimar-Fiordo 2. The general objective was to describe the sea surface temperature in the zone between 46º LS and 52º LS, and from the 73º 52’ LW to the 76º 30’ LW, considering the channel and fjord zone. The analysis was based on satellite images of sea surface temperature. The images used came from the AVHRR radiometer of the NOAA satellite, from the year 1995 to 1998. The cartographic representation and the analysis of the seasonal variability of the sea surface temperature was made using the software of the Geographical Information System (GIS), named IDRISI. The zone was with clouds during all the period of study, mainly in autumn. With the available images it was possible to observe a big difference...

Estimating turbidity and total suspended matter in the Adour River plume (South Bay of Biscay) using MODIS 250-m imagery ArchiMer
Petus, Caroline; Chust, Guillem; Gohin, Francis; Doxaran, David; Froidefond, Jean-marie; Sagarminaga, Yolanda.
The Basque coastal waters (South Bay of Biscay) are directly influenced by the Adour River freshwater plume. The Adour outflow leads to important variations of suspended matter concentrations and turbidity, which in turn may affect biological productivity and water quality. This study aims at both developing specific algorithms and testing the efficiency of atmospherically corrected MODIS-Aqua 250-m surface reflectance product (MYD09) to map total suspended matter concentrations and turbidity within the Adour coastal region. First, regional empirical algorithms based on in-situ data were tested to retrieve the concentration of total suspended matter and turbidity from the remote sensing reflectance. Then, the respective sensitivity of MODIS surface...

OceanDocs
Bava, J..
The objective was to use the synoptic capability of NOAA-AVHRR images, and the physical variables inferred from them, in order to achieve spatial and temporal analysis that may allow correlating the satellite variables with oceanographic processes and biological or fishing data. Methodologies of image processing were developed to make possible the use of AVHRR information for the standardized and reliable generation of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) images (using bands 3 to 5 in the thermal infrared), and water reflectance images (using optic bands 1 and 2) as an index of surface turbidity in coastal zones. A methodology was also generated in order to obtain gradients images derived from SST images, which allows the identification of oceanographic fronts....

Satellite and in situ observations of a late winter phytoplankton bloom, in the northern Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Gohin, Francis; Lampert, Luis; Guillaud, Jean-francois; Herbland, Alain; Nezan, Elisabeth.
A phytoplankton bloom was observed in late winter 2000, on the continental shelf offshore of southern Brittany, in northwestern Bay of Biscay. This bloom appeared initially along the 120-m isobath, in stratified and clear waters, at the interface between the oceanic water and the plumes of southern Brittany rivers (mainly the Loire and Vilaine). The development of the bloom was triggered by favourable meteorological conditions, characterised by solar irradiance reaching the maximum level expected for that period of the year. Outside of the bloom area, the phytoplankton photosynthesis was irradiance limited: inshore, because of the stronger attenuation of the light; offshore, because of the weak stratification. The hydrological conditions at the onset of...

Shoreline detection using Terra SAR-x quad polarization mode OceanDocs
Gurreonero Robinson, Diego; Bijker, Wietske; Tolpekin, Valentyn.

The use of satellite data in oceanographic and fishery studies in the SW Atlantic is reviewed. First, terms commonly used in the remote sensing literature are defined. The main satellite sensors used in oceanographic applications are described, and the principles of the remote estimation of two important variables, sea surface temperature(SST)and ocean color, are discussed. The use of remotely sensed data in oceanographic studies of the SW Atlantic is reviewed. Most studies are based on satellite SST fields and describe circulation in the open, particularly near the confluence of the Brazil and Malvinas currents. Due to the limited number of fishery studies based on satellite data in the SW Atlantic, examples from other parts of the world are reviewed....
